The goal of this project was to allow students to practice and increase their knowledge of English in an environment where they could also do sports as it has been shown that combining physical activity with a language aids learning. On Wednesday morning, fourteen 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders and two teachers met at the Realschule in Eschen to stretch their muscles, even their brains! They explored, in English, breakfasts from around the world. The students created a shopping list for a British breakfast, went shopping for the ingredients, and then cooked the breakfast with minimal assistance from the teachers. After enjoying their meal and some English small talk, the students cleaned up the kitchen and were rewarded with an English film.
Thursday morning began with a scavenger hunt at Robinson Playground. This was followed by three hours of climbing at the Seilpark in Triesen. Even though the weather was chilly, the students enjoyed stretching their other muscles. They found it challenging, but not impossible to continue speaking English while climbing. The first students to finish came back to Robinson playground with one of the teachers and made a fire. The students replenished their energy by grilling out sausages and eating the lunch that they had brought with them. Afterwards, the students organized some games like tag which they played until it was time to catch the bus back to Eschen.
At the end of each half-day, two students were chosen to receive a rubber band for speaking English only. The students got to pick who they thought deserved the band. Finally, on Friday the group met at school to finish the film they had started on Wednesday. Afterwards, they took the bus to Vaduz to play Minigolf, and the winners with the most rubber bands won a prize. Everybody was tired but had enjoyed themselves and improved their English at the same time.
